Dirt Is Your Friend

Hello Everyone!

In this post I wrote a few months ago, I introduced you to my father's amazing reverse graffiti company called GreenGraffiti. Recently, he was asked to be a speaker at TEDx Warwick, which is a huge honor and an amazing opportunity. Today, his video came out. And even I, who have known my own father my whole life, was again shocked and surprised by what an incredible job he did.

First of all, I would like you to know that my father is, and has always been, my hero. He has been my inspiration for everything I've done, and supported me through every decision I've ever made. Even when I told him I wanted to move 5357 miles away from him, which I know would absolutely devastate him, he did nothing but support me and help me make my dream come true. My father was the person who inspired me to write, and who helped me discover my passion. I admire my dad not just as a father, but most importantly as a person. He is the most passionate and intelligent person I know. If my dad finds something that interests him, he doesn't just go "oh that's cool" and move on, but he will find out everything about it and then excitedly tell my mom and me about it when he gets home. When my dad has to do something (whether it's for work or even buying Christmas presents), he always gives not 100, but 200%. My dad is in no way a slacker and is always passionate about what he does. And I think that's amazing. In fact, I hope to be exactly like him some day. Sure, it's hard when you're in college to be excited about everything you do. Am I really that excited to study for my criminal justice exam? Not so much. But I hope that one day in the future, I will find a job that I love because I'm passionate about it, and not just because it pays my bills. I hope I find a husband I can still look forward to seeing when he comes home from work, even after 24 years. And I hope that if I have a child (or hopefully, children), I will be able to pass this inexhaustible source of passion and enthusiasm that my father has instilled in me, on to them.

One night about ten years ago my father woke up at about 4 am with an idea. Instead of thinking "that's cool" and going back to sleep, he got up and worked it out. My dad is very passionate about the advertisement industry, and even more so about the environment. Sadly, these two rarely go hand in hand. Then he discovered the sustainable advertisement movement, and that changed his life forever. He said goodbye to his old job at an advertisement agency and risked a lot for something he was passionate about. From day one I have always thought that reverse graffiti was THE COOLEST THING on the planet. Seriously. It's so awesome! So it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that I am my father's #1 fan in everything he and his company do. In fact, every one of my friends have heard me brag about how cool my daddy's job is and I have even considered taking over the company when he retires.

Then the TEDx video came out. I had obviously heard a lot about it from both my parents and was sad that I couldn't be there to support him, but I was rooting for him even from across the world. It took about 6 weeks for the video to come out, but today it finally did. Now I have always been a "daddy's little princess" and really consider my dad one of my closest friends, and I have not seen him in 3 months, or 13 weeks, or 83 days, which is a really, really long time. In fact, it is the longest I have ever been away from him and it absolutely breaks my heart. So when I saw him in that video I cried a little, but stopped quickly when I started listening to what he was saying. Even though I obviously knew he was dead nervous since he told me that himself, I was so impressed by not only how good his talk was, but also by how well he brought it. I love listening to my dad talking about things he's passionate about because I always learn something new, and even after listening about dirt for ten years I still got new knowledge out of that video.

I work very hard at everything I do and I strive to make my parents proud (and luckily they couldn't be more proud of me), but sometimes the roles reverse. And today is one of those times. I could not be prouder of my father, not just for this amazing TED talk, but for the father, husband, and person he is.

So here it is, watch it, share it with your friends and most importantly, discuss! As always, let me know what you think in the comments!

  1. Rowan, you make me cry! What a lovely blog post. I hope you go for what ever it is that makes you happy. Work does not have to be a job you go to but can be something that you love to do AND get paid for even if it is a job that may not seem very sexy to others.
Can't wait to see you again. Lots to talk about. Big hugs and kisses you dad.

  2. Hi Rowan, I attended high school with your dad. I truly enjoyed your blog entry and watching his video! I was great to see him again, and see his passion explode in this video! Excellent idea!
Your blog entry is amazing and well written. It was beautiful to read how much love you have for your dad. I'm certain you will be successful in anything you choose. And I agree with your dad, "I hope you go for what ever it is that makes you happy." Life is too short not to! Erin McBride (SBCHS Class of 1981) :)
